Pleasure Dome: COMBAT SHOCK and THE DRILLER KILLER

The second “Pleasure Dome” Double Feature consists of COMBAT SHOCK (1986) and THE DRILLER KILLER (1979). Both films are set in Reagan-era New York, and both directors have a connection to German cinema: Abel Ferrera (DRILLER KILLER) was taught by Rosa von Praunheim in San Francisco. Buddy Giovinazzo was a Fassbinder fan, has been living in Berlin since 1999 and has directed many “Tatort,” “Polizeiruf”, and “Wilsberg” episodes. COMBAT SHOCK, a film produced by the infamously trashy Troma, is about a Vietnam vet with trauma, a stupid girlfriend, and mutant children ala ERASERHEAD on a mission against a drug dealer. THE DRILLER KILLER is like a punk take on genre cinema. An artist goes insane due to poverty and drills people who are even more worse off than him with a power drill. The 35mm print of THE DRILLER KILLER has some water damage towards the end.
