Coinciding with Jazzfest Berlin, b-ware!ladenkino presents “Jazz on Screen.“ In this seven-film program, Thelonious Monk (THELONIOUS MONK: STRAIGHT, NO CHASER) and Ornette Coleman (ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA) are the most traditional musicians featured. There’s a focus on European pioneers of free jazz like Swiss pianist and drummer IRÈNE SCHWEIZER, the Berliner TASTENARBEITER - ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH and the saxophonist Peter BRÖTZMANN. In the doc MILFORD GRAVES FULL MANTIS, drummer Milford Graves explains how a metronome killed swing and is otherwise hostile and even dangerous. BLUE FOR A MOMENT follows drummer, composer, poet and fine artist Sven- Åke Johansson. The short DREAM BABY DREAM, made in cooperation with Jazzfest, will play before the main program.
