ARMAGEDDON TIME tells a very gentle and nuanced coming-of-age story set in Queens, New York in the 1980s. While his older brother Ted goes to a private school, daydreamer Paul (Michael Banks Repeta), who most likes to draw, goes to sixth grade in a public school. He likes it there, but he‘s an underachiever, especially after he befriends grade repeater Johnny (Jaylin Webb), who isn‘t scared of anyone, especially not class teacher Mr. “Turkey“ Turteltaub. When John and Paul are caught smoking weed, the school and parents take action: John, the Black boy who is in a precarious living situation, is threatened with going to a special school and foster parents, and Paul, a child of a Jewish middle class family with ambitions, becomes a private student with a school uniform and briefcase. In the auditorium there is talk of the “new elite“ of the country, and in this world there is no place for his best friend. ARMAGEDDON TIME is about a political awakening told from Paul‘s perspective. Confronted by contradictory impressions and contradicting expectations and loyalties, Paul become more and more aware of the fractures in society, but also within his own family. There‘s his grandparents generation with their experiences of escape and discrimination, but there‘s also his father (Jeremy Strong) who works as a plumber and has to deal with his relative‘s snobbery and who dreams of his children climbing up the ladder. Moments of affection and hardness alternate. Paul‘s anchor in this situation is his principled and unshakeable grandfather Aaron (Anthony Hopkins), who picks him up and reminds him that the most important thing is to be a “mensch.“
