A Walk in the Woods

Bill Bryson (Robert Redford), retired author of travel guides and his best friend Katz (Nick Nolte) an alcoholic out of shape, decide to walk the Appalachian Trail.

Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, and Emma Thompson could read out the Mumbai yellow pages and it would still be a hoot. A WALK IN THE WOODS, based on Bill Bryson’s travel novel, is better written and has significantly more punchlines that are delivered with perfect timing. Bryson (Redford) is a grumpy old travel writer who hasn’t written anything for a long time and wishes to retire with his delightful wife (Thompson). Bryson hates social commitments and often does not behave well during those events. One night after such an occasion, Bryson goes to walk in the forest behind his house while muttering to himself and discovers a hiking trail with a signpost reading “Appalachian Trail.” Redford portrays the awakening adventurous spirit with his typical shift of focus: the bank safe is cracked, the horses healed, the boat can float once again. A quick decision is made to hike on the Appalachian Trail, 3,300 kilometers along the Eastern mountain range, from Georgia to Maine. Bryson only finds Katz (Nolte), an old school pal and a sober alcoholic, to go with him. Katz has a good reason to flee into the wilderness and is grumpier than Bryson. Their encounter with bears, nags, sport fanatics, snow, and rain are highly amusing. The key element of this harmless buddy movie is not the search for deeper meaning but rather watching the aging Sundance Kid and his good Butch Cassidy replacement as they try not to get their feet wet.
