Z-inema

World Cinema & Horror Classics

In January, Z-inema will be showing genre films from South America, Africa, India and Turkey. The Brazilian film MEDUSA (3.1) is about a female terror gang that belongs to a radical Christian sect. The supporting film is Australian short THE BECKONING FAIR ONE, based on the classic ghost story by Oliver Onions. The South African film INDEMNITY (10.1) by Travis Taute is a genre mix with a big budget about a large-scale conspiracy. REMAKE, REMIX, RIP-OFF (17.1) by Cem Kaya is a documentary about the cheap Turkish remakes of Hollywood blockbusters. In JALLIKATTU by Lijo Jose Pellissery, a north Indian village hunts an escaped bull. FIVE FINGERS FOR MARSEILLE is a South African post-western about the loss of political ideals. In February there will be horror film classics. In THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (7.2) Leatherface swings a chainsaw, in Lucio Fulci‘s THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY (14.2) the horror is in the basement, and in the first two films of Don Coscaerelli‘s PHANTASM series (21.2 & 28.2) the “Tall Man“ wreaks havoc with the help of small, flying killer balls and hobbit-sized aliens in Jedi robes. There‘s also a bit of teen sex. Without a doubt, it is the strangest franchise of the 80s.
