In Joanna Hogg‘s semi-autobiographical film THE SOUVENIR (2019) – practically the favorite movie of the British press – privileged film student Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne) has a relationship with the arrogant, mysterious Anthony (Tom Burke). The film feels like a car crash in slow motion, writes Mark Kermode. THE SOUVENIR PART II is about the time after the relationship with Anthony. Julie is busy with her thesis project at university and presents her teachers with a freestyle script which she calls a “memorial,“ while fellow student Patrick (Richard Aoyade) is struggling with a project that‘s reminiscent of Julian Temple‘s ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS.
