Early Masters of the cinematic arts: Hawks, Hitchcock

The alphabetic film series is working its way up to H in the spring. In May, they will show three film noirs by Howard Hawks: SCARFACE (1932, 4.5), TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT (1944, 18.5) and THE BIG SLEEP (1946, 25.5).

June, meanwhile will be entirely dedicated to the grandmaster of thrillers, Alfred Hitchcock.

In THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (1934, June 1st) a couple is targetted by gangsters who kidnap their daughter in order to stop them from averting a planned assassination. In THE 39 STEPS (1935, June 8th) a canadian is suspected of killing a british secret agent and has to convince her colleagues, the London police as well as a stunning blonde that he is actually innocent. SECRET AGENT (June 15th, 1936) is another tale of espionage, this time set in Switzerland during the First World War. Karl Verloc (Oskar Homolka) seems to be an unremarkable citizen and husband but for a criminal organisation he is planning a bombing in London. SABOTAGE (1936) plays on June 22nd. And on June 29th, A LADY VANISHES (1938) from a train and noone is willing to believe the only witness to the disappearance.
