Wild Rose

Irish actress and singer Jessie Buckley plays singer Roselynn Harlan, who dreams of performing in Nashville but has to stand on her feet again after being in prison in her hometown Glasgow.

More

WILD ROSE is a film that led to the very successful comeback of Irish actress Jessie Buckley. Buckley‘s career began 11 years ago at a BBC talent show where she came in second place. Since then, Buckley has performed on musical and theater stages as well as on TV shows like “Taboo,“ “Fargo,“ and „Chernobyl“ and several films. However, it has only been since she started covering classic country songs that Buckley found success again as a singer.

Irish Jessie Buckley plays singer Roselynn Harlan from Glasgow who has just been released from prison. She dreams of performing in the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, the official country mecca, and tries to at least get her old job as a singer at the Glaswegian Ole Opry again even though her ankle monitor forces her to return home at 9 pm every night and her two children can‘t stay at their grandmother‘s (Julie Water) forever. The family scenes, in which Roselynn rages against inner and outer pressures and tries to cope with her children and mother, are the most convincing parts of the film. Roselynn‘s friendship to her boss, the rich wife of a garden architect who puts her in contact with an important country DJ, isn‘t as well-conceived. However, the dialogue is precise, Jessie Buckley has a presence and a drive and sings like you would expect from a European ex-musical singer: with heart, but filled with affectations and without the relaxed intensity of the original versions by Emmylou Harris and Wynona Judd. Like many British films about media pop phenomena, WILD ROSE is quite nice, but you might not need the t-shirt.
