White, white Day

An ex-policeman and widower renovates a house for his children‘s family, but gets more and more obsessed with the idea that his wife had an affair before she died. An Icelandic film without any frills.

More

Everything is white because of all the fog on the day Ingimundur‘s wife steers off the road and dies. On white days, when the sky and earth merge, the dead speak with the living, according to Icelandic folklore. The camera captures how Ingimundur‘s remote house changes over the course of two years after the accident in long takes from the same perspective. Only then does it get closer to Ingimundur. The former Icelandic policeman hasn‘t gotten over his wife‘s death. His daughter Elín, his granddaughter Salka, whom he cares for lovingly, and his son-in-law are meant to move in soon. When his daughter brings a box full of her mother‘s belongings, Ingimundur discovers that his wife had contact with a man named Olgeir. He can‘t let go of the thought.

The way Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson plays the taciturn, deeply grieving, but also increasingly obsessive, Ingimundur is great – and also got him nominated as Best Actor in the European Film Awards 2019 and won him the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes. Sigurðsson‘s interplay with his talented film granddaughter Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir is also moving. Director Hlynur Pálmason, known for the award-winning WINTER BROTHERS, implements a slow pace for his second feature film A WHITE, WHITE DAY and also uses the fantastic cinematographer Maria von Hausswolff just like in WINTER BROTHERS. The visual language gives room to interpretation and also creates layers that reflect the events: a stone rolling off a cliff, the white fog which Ingimundur seems to be trapped in, just like he‘s trapped in his grief.
