VOX LUX introduces us to the narrative in a cryptic, ominous, and dark way. A boy steps in front of a music class and shoots his classmates and teachers at a high school. 13-year-old Celeste (Raffey Cassidy) survives but is severely injured. During the memorial she sings a song together with her sister (Stacy Martin) on the piano and becomes a star overnight. The clip goes viral and a big record label offers her an album contract that will elevate her to the Mount Olympus of pop. Living in the limelight has definitely left its mark 18 years later. Celeste (Natalie Portman) is 31. In the evening she will perform in front of 30,000 people. But before that she will have to collect the shards of her lost youth and confront the trauma that she never really processed and take responsibility for her own daughter.

After his remarkable directorial debut CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER, actor Brady Corbet (THE CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA) has made a nightmarish alternative to musical tearjerkers like A STAR IS BORN. He shows the genesis of a star, the rise and fall, and the millenial media frenzy caught between consumerism and terrorist attacks in three acts. Corbet purposefully omits visualizing the pop star cliches. We learn a lot in voice over monologues narrated by Willem Dafoe. Corbet includes many blank spaces that the audience has to fill. Before the end it‘s clear that VOX LUX won‘t be an easy ride and that the goal is the abyss. Till then you can lose yourself in the music by Sia and Scott Walker, the fantastically choreographed stage performances, Jude Law as the manic manager, and the hypnotic presence of Natalie Portman.
