Thoroughbreds

Rich girls and former childhood friends Lily and Amanda decide to get Lily‘s stepfather out of the way. Schoolyard dealer Tim is meant to help them do that.

Cory Finlay‘s debut cause a stir in festivals, partially due to the fact that THOROUGHBREDS was the last film of actor Anton Yelchin who died tragically on June 2016. THOROUGHBREDS is also a refreshingly amoral film. Rich girls Lily (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Amanda (Olivia Cooke) are in a crisis. Amanda allegedly killed her own horse with a knife. Lily appears to be nice and conformist on the outside, but is about to be expelled from her boarding school. She blames her stepfather for it and would like get rid of him. In order to do that, she gets reacquainted with childhood friend Amanda who is reputed to be a full-fledged psychopath and says that she has no feelings, neither joy nor sadness. The two hire drug dealer Tim (Anton Yelchin) to do the dirty work, but their half-baked plan doesn‘t go as they thought.

Yelchin playing a pretentious loser who sees himself as a player is the most interesting character in Finlay‘s film. Unlike other bad girl classics like HEAVENLY CREATURES, HEATHERS, and SPRING BREAKERS, the women‘s crime isn‘t gleefully rebellious but is rather about listlessly getting rid of an obstacle. Lily is manipulative and likes to be comfortable, Amanda is definitely unscrupulous, but both of them are most interested in preserving their privilege. The things that once characterized teen rebellion – hubris, a perspective outside the established adult world, the freedom to be stupid and make a big mess – is only incarnated in the figure of the eternal “white trash“ loser, parking lot servant, and schoolyard dealer Tim. You can‘t forget that Cory Finlay is a young man. THOROUGHBREDS is more about guy blues and less a feminist manifesto.
