I Swear
Based on the life story of John Davidson, the moving film is about how John grows up with Tourette’s and suffers greatly from the hostility of his surroundings, until the mother of a school friend takes him in.
The future looks promising for 12 year old John (Scott Ellis Watson). He just entered secondary school and has found his first friends. He’s so good as a goalie that his trainer has invited a talent scout. But then John begins to develop tics. First it’s head twitches, then he blurts out obscenities and swear words. The crash is brutal. The adults discipline him, and the other children turn away from him. His father deserts the family. The diagnosis of Tourette years later and strong medication don’t improve things much.
I SWEAR is based on the life of Scottish Tourette activist John Davidson and sticks relatively close to the fact. The film doesn’t sugarcoat anything – like the real Davidson, John gets contemptuous and disgusted looks from everywhere, he is laughed at, arrested, and beaten up – and yet it tells a very comforting story: John (Robert Aramaya) is in his mid 20s, a shadow of his former self, when he meets an old school friend Murray who tells hims that his mother Dottie (Maxine Peake) has cancer and the first thing that comes out of John when he meets Dottie is – of course – “you’re going to die, haha.” It’s the beginning of a wonderful friendship.
As a nurse, Dottie understands what’s going on with John and she takes him in. She also arranges a job interview for him with the community center’s caretaker, Tommy (Peter Mullan), who remains just as unfazed as she does when John serves him his tea with the words, “I use spunk for milk.” It’s a turning point in John’s life, who doesn’t just become a popular caretaker, but also helps make the syndrome more known and organizes a network for afflicted people as a Tourette post child.
I SWEAR is both entertaining and moving and shows how things can get better if there’s one or two people who believe that it can.
