In the beginning of this historical summary of over 40 years of thrash metal in and from Germany, you first have to hear from about how thrash metal was tougher, more direct, faster, and more aggressive than any other kind of metal, and that Teutonic Thrash is something very special. The big German four, Kreator, Destruction, Sodom and Tankard, are mentioned in the same breath as Metallica and Slayer. But that‘s it as far as excitement goes. In TOTAL THRASH, the protagonists of the scene are very calm and jovial, and almost all of them have a beer in their hand, when speaking about how bands made up of childhood friends emerged from youth clubs and dirty rehearsal rooms in the early 80s, wanting to scream about the boredom and frustration of living in these remote regions and creating a scene through mutual support and their shared love of metal. Cassettes were swapped, concerts were organised, labels were founded and alcohol was consumed at spontaneous parties under highway bridges. The story of the development from the underground to a genre able to fill huge festival halls comes alive with the help of a lot of visual material from the era. They were even up to speed behind the wall, the ex GDR members proudly emphasize. War and social injustice were popular themes for lyrics and album covers, but the biggest conflict that threatened the thrash metal scene was the beginning of the 90s, when grunge and MTV brought new influences to the relatively down-to-earth genre. However, they also managed survived this “crisis“, and a new thrash generation making devil horns along the old hands came up. TOTAL THRASH certainly won‘t garner any metal disciples who didn‘t like the genre before, but it‘s hard to imagine a more comprehensive film showing what has been holding this scene together for decades.
