Things aren‘t going well for New Yorker Fran (Jenny Slate). The artist isn‘t getting anywhere with her paintings, her arrogant boyfriend Robert, who she declined an art scholarship in Norway for, dumps her during their weekend getaway, and her loner dad Levi (David Paymer) tells the family that he and Fran‘s mother Mirela (Jessica Hecht) are separating. When desperate Fran gets the opportunity to paint artist Nils‘ (Fridtjov Såheim) shed in Lofoten over the summer, she is thankful for the unusual offer – anything to get away from New York! Though Fran finds the rugged landscape breath-taking, living up North is difficult at first. Gruff Nils doesn‘t seem to be enthusiastic about Fran‘s presence, Fran can‘t sleep at night because the sun is always shining, and she shares the barren caravan with a goat. But things change when Russian Yasha (Alex Sharp), who also grew up in New York, appears in the nearby Viking museum in order to fulfil his father‘s last wish of getting a Viking burial. The romantic and strange comedy THE SUNLIT NIGHT is based on the eponymous novel by Rebecca Dinerstein who also wrote the screenplay. David Wnendt (ER IST WIEDER DA, FEUCHTGEBIETE) directed it and was able to get Zach Galifianakis (THE HANGOVER) to play an over-excited, wannabe viking. THE SUNLIT NIGHT thrives on the weird and warm characters, imaginative decor, and the Lofoten landscape that is the exact opposite of Fran‘s hectic life in Manhattan – and which gets her to relax and pluck up some courage.
