Jimmy Erskine (Ian McKellan) is a feared theatre critic who enjoys wielding his powerful pen, deciding about the success or failure of a production or a performer. When Erskine is arrested for homosexuality and let go by the new editors of his paper, he decides to use blackmail to get his job back. Though successful, things soon escalate and it does not take long for the first death to occur.
