Dave Eggers published a dystopian novel in 2013 set in the near future. A global tech company called “The Circle“ is in the process of becoming a seamless control and surveillance company. “The Circle“ unifies the services of Google, Facebook, Apple, and Twitter, collects health information, manages medical records, and organizes elections. Mae (Emma Watson) is a new employee at the company. She’s excited to work for “the coolest company in the world“ at first, but doubts slowly arise. The question is, can anyone break the power of The Circle?

Today, only four years later, Egger’s vision of the future has become a reality to a large extent. The Swedish start-up “Epicenter Routine“ implants its employees with microchips, the specialized company of Google called “Alphabet Inc.“is working hard on collecting health records, facial recognition, and data glasses are about to be mass produced. The adaptation of THE CIRCLE consequently plays in a world that looks very similar to ours. A stylish campus that soon replaces Mae’s family and friends, multiple screens at work, the never-ending social media obligations. The comments of Mae’s followers flash of the edge of the screen like background noise: stupid jokes, irrelevant blathering, sympathy, insults.

THE CIRCLE is less of a thriller than the trailer makes it out to seem. It offers a shrewd vision of an almost-present future where machines aren’t the ones taking over the power, but rather the structures created by info tech businesses. A future that appears to be as colorful and friendly as one of the Circle’s catchphrases: “Sharing is Caring“.
