1985. “Can you get it from sweat?” In discos and at parties people talk in hushed voices, and in the modern dance troupe sweat-soaked t-shirts are exchanged. Some won’t frequent restaurants where gay waiters work in fear that they may have touched the food. Rock Hudson is visibly sick. A new test is on the market but will you be quarantined or registered if you text positive? The film TEST is set in a moment of great fear and paranoia but before the time when everyone who was young in the 1980s already lost someone to the disease. Frankie (Scott Marlowe), a dancer in his mid-20s, and is starting his career as a modern dancer in San Francisco. He’s a lanky guy who spends a lot of time either working on his technique, trying to undo the long tangled phone cord, or catching mice in his apartment in the most humane way possible. His colleague, friend, and foe Todd teases him with his carefree spirit and sexual exploits. The troupe is preparing for a performance called “After Dark,” though it is unclear what meaning the piece has for the film. The slogan “Fuck Art – Let´s Dance” is on a card in the change room. Frankie tries ecstasy, the new drug that makes you love everyone. After having sex, he decides to get tested. With a great 1980s soundtrack, Chris Mason Johnson gives us a detailed snapshot of the era, when androgyny was in, condoms a novelty, and drugs and partying the best way to avoid the fear around the early years of the AIDS epidemic. TEST is sexy and a bit strange: “Do you think monogamy will be the new trend? It seems so unnatural!” The men in the film are beautiful to look at and they can dance.
