Tangerine

A colorful transgender Christmas face on the streets of LA: Sin-Dee, just out of prison, is hunting down her cheating boyfriend Chester while Alexandra does her best to stop them from having an all too dramatic reunion.

More

They chase each other on the streets of L.A. like predators. Sin-Dee, who just got out of prison, is trying to find her unfaithful boyfriend Chester, while Alexandra tries to prevent the all too dramatic reunion. The two friends exchange money for sexual services on the street – the film’s main setting. They occasionally meet familiar faces: other transgender friends, cops on patrol, and Armenian cab drive Razmik who is driving drunk passengers from point A to B on Christmas day. TANGERINE is the color in which this film was shot – with an iPhone and on cinemascope. The film gem was discovered at Sundance. The soundtrack is just as flashy, repeating its rising cadence and directing our eyes to the rushing protagonists. The mood is exalted and threatens to spill over at any moment – if Sin-Dee loses her nerves. Alexandra’s performance at a bar serves as a small intermezzo to which Sin-Dee and her romantic rival Dinah arrive at the last minute.
An artillery of verbally discriminating language is fired. Dinah says that Chester has changed from being a “half fag” to completely gay, Alexandra calls her “fish” – which is slang for biologically female – and Chester pits them all against each other and tops it off by saying “this is some girl’s shit.” The tough reality of the streets, like prostitution and promiscuity, is what lies behind the violent words, and it also binds the group of people together. Sean Baker has succeeded in making a thrilling film that is psychologically suspenseful with well thought out details like the tangerine-shaped tree of wonder which is supposed to help hide the smell of vomit in Razmik’s cab.
