Especially around Oscar time films are often reduced to the performance of their lead actors. It’s not without reason that films like CAPOTE, LAST KING OF SCOTLAND or THE QUEEN are popular for the miracle transformation of their main actors, who are then awarded with an Oscar. And so it is with the beloved Julianne Moore, who has been nominated 5 times, this time for her role in STILL ALICE, but until now has never won. In the drama by the director duo Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland Moore plays a woman diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. To put it another way: ideal Oscar material. Yet Moore is too good, too subtle an actor to just fall back on an exaggerated performance. Instead she lays out the ordeal of the main character, the linguist Alice, as an inner struggle against forgetting. At the beginning Alice is full of life having just celebrated her 50th birthday, she is professionally successful, has a loving husband (Alec Baldwin) and three beautiful grown children. In particular, Alice’s relationship with her youngest daughter, Lydia (Kristen Stewart), who dreams of becoming an actor, is an important side story in the film. Alice’s mental decline is told in a linear way but yet it is loosely narrated, with numerous leaps in time, weeks and months compressed. Although STILL ALICE is a typical Oscar film, it is worth watching for the sake of Moore’s performance.
