Spotlight

In 2002 the Boston Globe’s investigative „Spotlight“ unit uncovers the sexual abuse of young community members by Catholic priests and the systematic decade-long cover-up by the Church.

More

In 2012, when the liberal paper was just about to celebrate its 130th anniversary, the Boston Globe’s “Spotlight” investigative team wrote a big story on the decade-long abuse of young community members by priests which was systematically covered up by the Catholic Church. The print crisis was on the horizon and the decision to confront the socially powerful institution, turning a big portion of the Catholic readers against them, was economically dangerous and internally debated. A year later they were given a Pulitzer Prize for their work on this piece and many follow-up articles. Director Tom McCarthy has turned this explosive story into a quick and fact-oriented ensemble piece which gives actors like Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, and Rachel McAdams their moments to shine. With its sobering set-up and smart script, SPOTLIGHT traces the journalist’s research, which doesn’t only focus on the traumatized victims and the self-righteous, perpetrator-protecting Church, but also exposes a society that would prefer to look away. SPOTLIGHT doesn’t let anyone off the hook, not the legislative, judicial, or the executive powers, let alone the journalists themselves that only got on the case when new editor Marty Baron (Liev Schreiber) is confronted with the issue even though they had been getting hints on the matter for years. SPOTLIGHT was nominated for three Golden Globes and six Oscars, among them “best film,” “best director,” “best screenplay,” and “best editing.”
