Sick Of Myself – Syk Pike

Signe takes questionable medication with strong side effects and becomes an “interesting“ medical case because she wants to get the same attention that her boyfriend Thomas usually gets.

More

Artist Thomas loves his girlfriend Signe ((Kristine Kujath Thorp, NINJA BABY) somehow. And Signe is happy about his success, but why does Thomas keep forgetting that she also helped him and focuses all of the attention on himself? Signe finds her life as a waitress interesting too. Recently, she rescued an injured patron. Maybe she just needs to get sick. Simulating a nut allergy is easy, but it doesn‘t last for long. There‘s a Russian medication she finds online that is meant to give you a big rash. What for? Oh, never mind! She could order it, and then she‘d have a mysterious illness, and everyone would visit her at the hospital, and Thomas would respect her, and maybe someone would like to write an article about her. Or she could be on TV. That would be a good plan, right? What could go wrong?

The darkly funny satire SICK OF MYSELF parodies the battle for attention in one‘s private life and in the public sphere. Signe values the status of being “sick“ too much to get better and hazards the consequences of more and more extreme body changes. When Thomas finally gives her the attention she craves, the film shows that it was worth it from Signe‘s perspective. Signe gets deeper and deeper into self-serving fantasies where her own funeral becomes an exclusive event. The film keeps shifting between relationship pathos, bitter satire where it isn‘t clear whether we should keep laughing, and body horror that evokes empathy and amused disgust. Signe‘s story is exciting and thrilling to watch, but if there‘s a moral, it definitely isn‘t the one Signe is aiming for as the narrator.
