A legend from the 11th century: In Japan, a feudal system dominates, which enslaves and harasses those subordinate within it. Governor Masauji refuses to do as the others in power do and is known instead for his mildness. He falls out of favor as a result and his wife (Kinuyo Tanaka) and their two children end up under the control of cruel land steward Sansho.
