Why Don't You Just Die

A garishly violent chamber piece in a small russian flat where nobody has a clear conscience or gets out unbloodied.

More

Matvey knocks on his girlfriend‘s parents door. At dinner, father Andrey eyes the young man suspiciously, and the brawny chief inspector‘s mistrust is justified: Matvey brough a hammer instead of flowers, he intends on punishing dad for what he did to his daugther. Andrey doesn‘t know what this is about, but he does know how to deal with an untalented murderer. He can clear up any further questions once the young man is chained up in the bathroom. But Matvey has a few tricks up his sleeve and the situation escales very quickly and gets bloody in a stalemate with bad survival chances for everyone present. Maybe a call with his daughter Olya can clear the situation up. Maybe mommy should make tea for everyone first.

Kirill Sokolov‘s first feature-length film doesn‘t have a message and has minimal subtext, but only if you see Russian society as a corrupt, violent moloch. However, the film is a lot of fun with its cartoony time-looped violence, with disgusting situations in extreme close-up, and the spilling of a lot of artificial blood. The middle-class apartment is destroyed over the course of the film along with its occupants and every shot is lovingly arranged in deep colors like a comic. The fights keep stopping as they attempt to restore peace and find a sensible solution. But they‘re all guilty of something and there‘s a bag filled with money involved too. The fight escalates round by round until they discover who can manage to hold off dying the longest and who will prematurely be decorating the kitschy wallpaper. Until then Andrey will keep chewing his soothing salami a few more times. It‘s a lot of fun, but perhaps not for the whole family.
