June Again

After five years of dementia, June suddenly has a “lucid phase“ and is shocked to find out that the family has fallen apart in her absence. She proceeds to straighten things up with matriarchal vehemence.

More

Imagine you wake up and five years have passed. During this time your children have sold your house, worn out your favorite things, and run down your company. Moreover, they are estranged from each other. That‘s what happens to June (Noni Hazlehurst), who landed in a home with dementia after having several strokes. The illness is so advanced that June can‘t recognize her family and can‘t name objects anymore. But then, on one fine day, she is suddenly fully present. It‘s a “lucid phase,“ says the doctor, and warns that it can be over at any time. So June doesn‘t have a lot of time. She runs away from the home and is shocked to find out how the family has fallen apart in her absence and proceeds to straighten things up with matriarchal vehemence. Initially, we‘re completely on her side. The son is clearly a loser, the daughter is married to an idiot, and June and her go-getter energy is the only one who has the overview. Then you realize how she often ignores the wishes of her adult children and doesn‘t consider any opinion but her own. Maybe, June also begins to realize, not everything was great before her “disappearance“ and she‘s not completely faultless. JUNE AGAIN dreams up a scenario that makes it possible to pause, hug each other, and clear up misunderstandings before life hits you. It is partially funny, but also sad and very well-acted. Noni Hazlehurst as June is phenomenal, being able to switch from between distant-irritated to crystal clear in seconds, from dedicated and lovable to the imperious mother and super boss.
