You can stop feeling comfortable with yourself and trusting others so fast. It just takes one time for things to get dark and what remains is fear and anger. German-Persian Nico (Sara Fazilat) is brutally attacked on her way home from a party. With that, everything changes for the fun-loving and confident Berlin geriatric nurse. She swears that no one will ever hurt her again and begins to learn karate and self-defense. She puts up with all of the physical exertion and the ruthless training style of karate teacher Andy (Andreas Marquardt). “Don‘t flinch,“ he shouts at her – she has to learn how to put up with pain and confront the danger.

NICO is the thesis film of screenwriter and protagonist Sara Fazilat which she made in close collaboration with Eline Gehring (director) and Francy Fabritz (cinematographer). They highlight the subtle and realistically covert everyday racism and the traumatizing consequences of violence. Covered up in a cap and hoodie, Nico rushes across Berlin, her city, which suddenly feels so foreign. Places that until recently felt sunny and inviting are now just threatening and full of potential enemies. Her work also suffers, it‘s not just about being at eye level with her clients, but also brightening their day with gentleness and humor. Brigitte (Brigitte Kramer) cries about her nurse when she sees bruises, but that doesn‘t help Nico since she‘s the one who has to console and take care yet again. Her best friend Rosa also doesn‘t know what she should do to support her. Nico has to get to know the world in a whole new way – she has to relearn how to be Nico.

There are many important themes in NICO that aren‘t presented to the audience on a silver platter. The filmmakers have put a lot of effort into creating these characters and their individual traits, thereby creating a universe filled with fascinating characters that you would like to spend more than 70 minutes with. We encounter two great female characters in the form of Nico and Rosa, whose intimate, realistic friendship gives hope – for the storyline, but also for the future of the German landscape.
