In the mid-1990s the abduction of the president's son caused an uproar in Slovak society. One of the kidnappers later confessed and fled the country while his friend Robo died in a mysterious assassination.

When there were suggestions that the secret service had some involvement in the whole affair, prime minister Vladimír Mečiar claimed all of this "never happened".
