Young Elias (Jakob Mader) is about to graduate in 1968, but whereas the freedom of others is about to begin, his freedom is about to end. Studying is out of the question, he has to help his father as a big farmer in the Zillertal Alps. Elias is truly making an effort, but he enjoys reading most. “He just doesn‘t see the work,“ says the father, “he only sees his books.“ The mother, on the other hand, prefers the boy to read than just roving about, and when she finds out that Elias is dating Moid, who is divorced and already in her mid 20s, she interferes. Torn between his parent‘s demands and his own wishes, Elias becomes very depressed. The doctor recommends a sanatorium, but the father sends his son to live alone for half a year on a mountain pasture, in the Märzengrund, instead. When the six months are up, Elias refuses to return to the valley. Just the opposite, he moves higher up and builds a shack by the mountain lake. He stays there for 40 years. Based on a theatre play by Felix Mitterer, which is based on a true story, Adrian Goiginger (DIE BESTE ALLER WELTEN) tells the story of a radical dropout. The first part contrasts flashbacks of dark, oppressive family scenes in the valley with Elias‘ beginnings in the mountains. We see him as he piles up rocks for his sparse hut, catches fish, fells trees. Clear light falls on bright green meadows and Elias‘ gaze keeps following the falcons in the sky. The second part of the film is set 40 years later. Johannes Krisch is impressive as the stubborn older Elias who refuses to leave the mountain. He embodies an intransigence that the tame film doesn‘t dare to show otherwise.
