Lady Macbeth

LADY MACBETH, based on the Nikolai Leskov novel, transports the archaic passions of the Shakespeare archetype to the demure costume drama setting of a Jane Austen romance.

LADY MACBETH, based on Nikolai Leskov‘s novel “Lady Macbeth from Mzensk“ transports the archaic passions of the Shakespearean model to the buttoned up costume drama setting of a Jane Austen romance. Director William Oldroyd made a name for himself as a theatre director and you can see something akin to a theatre set in the extremely barren rooms of the English estate LADY MACBETH is set in. They work as a contained stage where the phenomenal actors can play out this big, passionate, dark, and simultaneously freeing drama. Katherine (Florence Pugh – a name to remember) is married off while she‘s young. Her new home is an isolated estate somewhere in England, her new companions are a disinterested husband, Alexander, his malicious father, and Anna the maid. Katherine reacts to the men‘s impositions in the samel controlled manner as when she answers Anna‘s friendly questions. But it isn‘t shyness that makes her reserved, it is a gesture of independence. When Katherine sits by the window, like an image of an exemplary housewife, she is yearning for forests and to feel the wind outside with her hands. When the men go on a trip and she remains alone with the house staff, she opens the window for the first time and the roars of the wind enliven a soundtrack that was oppressively quiet before. Katherine begins an affair with the coarse and aggressive farm hand Sebastian shortly after and discovers freedom and passion that she is unwilling to give up. Katherine, who isn‘t called “Macbeth“ for no reason, stops at nothing to protect her autonomy.
