Kneecap

In KNEECAP, the hip hop trio play a comic version of themselves and how the band formed - with a good dose of fiction.

More

The band Kneecap has made a name for themselves outside of their hometown of Belfast in recent years. Their success is based on the rousing sound between 90s rap, punk and electronic beats and the fact that Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí make no secret of their love of drugs or their attitude towards the British government. They rap mostly in Irish Gaelic, which has only been an official language in the north of Ireland again since 2022. The fight to preserve the Irish language and identity is also a topic in this semi-fictional and thoroughly amusing band biopic, which was developed in collaborated with director Rich Peppiatt.

The trio plays a heightened version of themselves and tell the story of how the band came to be - inspired by real experiences and with a good dose of fiction. DJ Próvaí, who usually wears a balaclava with the colors of the Irish flag when performing, was actually a music teacher and lost his job because of his performances with Kneecap. The secret baptism of Móglai Bap at the Catholic landmark Glen Mass Rock, including the ceremony being blown up by a police helicopter, also really happened. Less realistic is the plot about Bap's film father (stoically disheveled: Michael Fassbender), a freedom fighter who stages his own death. Despite the fast-paced staging of drug trips (TRAINSPOTTING is knocking), performances, animations and cat-and-mouse games with the police and rival groups, there is enough time to immerse yourself in the history, status quo, and linguistics of Northern Ireland via voice-over. For example, due to a lack of existing vocabulary, Kneecap invented Gaelic words for their favorite drugs. Like their songs, the film is a firework display of speed, clever humor, drug excess, and a raised middle finger.
