Wes Anderson has finally made another animated feature! ISLE OF DOGS is set in “Trash Island“ for long stretches of the film, the trash island of imaginary Japanese metropolis Megasaki. Mayor Kobayashi has banned dogs in the city because the human population is supposedly in danger of catching the dog diseases “dog flu“ and “snout fever,“ but it‘s a ruse. While professor Watanabe and his assistant Yoko Ono (played by Yoko Ono) frantically work on a serum in the city and an exchange students wants to expose the lies of the mayor, the banned dogs lead a miserable life on Trash Island and the actual heroes of the film, the boy dog gang made up of spoiled King, Duke, Rex, Boss, and Chief the stray dog, are also on the island. One day 12 year old Atari lands on the island looking for his dog Spot and the gang has a master and a mission again. Together with the little pilot King, Duke, Rex, Boss, and Chief try to find Spot and a way to save the dogs on the island.

ISLE OF DOGS is the most playful Wes Anderson film and that‘s saying something. The story is structured in a wild, meandering way that is almost impossible to retell. The images overflow with quotes, affectionate details, and a love for everything Japanese, whether it be taiko drummers, cherry blossoms, sushi, or Hokusai wood prints and everything, and I mean everything, is organized in the central perspective ala Anderson. ISLE OF DOGS is a grab bag of ideas and is aimed at those who like Anderson‘s eccentric humor and self-centered anti-heroes. Female dog Nutmeg asks Chief “Will you help him, the little pilot?“ “Why should I?“ he asks. “Because he‘s a 12 year old boy, dogs love those.“
