Tom (Sam Riley) had a promising career as a tennis professional ahead of him, if it weren’t for his shoulder injury. His 20s are now behind him and he lives alone in a hotel on Fuerteventura where he spends his time working as a tennis trainer. Nights are spent partying, drinking, and having one night stands, the days are spent feeling hungover and unchallenged. But when the Maguire family checks in to the hotel, it takes him out of his routine: not only does their son Anton (Dylan Torrell) immediately get on well with his new tennis teacher, Tom also seems to have a close, albeit mysterious, bond with Anne (Stacy Martin). He shows the family the remote places on the island, untouched beaches and natural caves, and gets closer and closer to Anne, while the conflict between her and her husband (Jack Farthing) keeps getting bigger. When he disappears after an evening at a club, Tom and Anne find themselves in the crosshairs of the local police chief.
In ISLANDS, Jan-Ole Gerster embarks on a neo-noir getaway to the Canary Islands. With impressive, relaxing images and a feel for the little human quirks, he combines the dreamy, seemingly aimless wandering of his debut, OH BOY, with the holiday atmosphere and biting social critique of “The White Lotus.” And with each of the numerous twists and turns, the character dynamics change, as does the narrative structure. The character study of the multifaceted tennis coach in the grip of a midlife crisis develops into a look at a fragile relationship, a noir crime thriller full of red herrings, and back again to a character study – only to peter out into holiday melancholy by the end.
