In the Middle of the River

War veteran Gabriel returns to New Mexico from Iraq as an injured and traumatized man in a world shaped by drugs, violence, and racism. Gabriel has to find out who killed his sister here.

More

Gabriel returns from the war. Wounded in Iraq, the 26 year old needs to constantly take pills for his physical and mental wounds in order to not completely fall apart. Rural New Mexico, where he returns, is a war zone of its own. Between trailers and dilapidated huts, “white trash“ folks meet Native Americans in a world marked by racism, drugs, and most of all, violence. Gabriel‘s little brother wants to join the local “white power“ movement and attacks the Navajos from the neighborhood in a meth haze with his friends. Gabriel‘s grandfather, a Vietnam vet and therefore a role model for many in town, beats his wife regularly and she always forgives him. Dana, the woman Gabriel left without an explanation 5 years ago, lets out her rage by boxing. But there‘s more rage every day for everyone. Gabriel tries to find out who killed his sister in this environment.

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RIVER puts viewers in a stranglehold and keeps on running. In the first moment you can only hear Gabriel‘s exhausted pants as he rampages through the city trying to find a target for his fists. There are perhaps only two scenes where the camera isn‘t in hectic motion in the entire film, it‘s always rightt by the character‘s necks, circling them, being confrontational with them while the surrounding noise makes for a delirious soundtrack. The amateur actors with whom director Damian John Harper shot the film with show their inexperience at times when they struggle with their lines, but they lend the story honesty and a necessary grounding at times. There are moments when the camera focuses on a river calmly flowing. Despite the turbulent behavior there‘s an emotional core hiding beneath all of them that is far more loving than you would guess in this environment.
