Ken Loach’s film I, DANIEL BLAKE, the winner of the Golden Palm in Cannes, is as no-nonsense as its protagonist. Carpenter Daniel Jones (Dave Jones), 59, has had a serious heart attack and gets caught in the machinery of social welfare offices. A labor office health check-up done by a case worker without a medical background tells him he is fit for work. “Can you stretch your arm enough to put your hat on? Can you run 100 meters with no shortness of breath?” Daniel Blake has to pretend he is looking for work but avoid actually being hired because he wouldn’t survive it. He is forced to endure the social systems, sanctions, and humiliations. This process ends with to him not getting any state help. The craftsman is a practical, smart, and relaxed man, but he can’t work with computers and feels utterly helpless. Then he gets together with young single mother Kate (Hayley Squires), who is getting kicked out of her London apartment and is forced into a province where she searches for ways to feed both of her children. For a while it looks like Kate and Daniel, who have nothing in common except for their poverty, are building a type of surrogate family to find a way out of hopelessness. I, DANIEL BLAKE is an angry film about the systematic humiliation of the British working class, but the process in German is practically identical. Loach also shows that individual protests and private solidary aren’t enough to overcome the incapacitation of the marginalized anymore.
