Diane Keaton doesn’t appear in films a lot anymore. In HAMPSTEAD PARK she plays charming and typically confused American Emily who lives in Hampstead Heath and whose life gets out of control after her husband’s death, especially financially. The concierge hands her new bills that she doesn’t open every day, and her apartment has a ceiling that drips. When she goes to the attic to look for things to sell, she sees a man who is bathing in the park pond. Donald, played by Brendan Gleeson, lives in a self-made hut in the middle of Heath and has just received his eviction notice as luxury apartments are going to be built there. When Emily finds out about the tramp’s problems, she begins to organize a protest movement which Donald wants nothing to do with at first. Slowly, a bond forms between Emily the dreamer, who cares better for others than for herself, and the prickly lone wolf who lets out his anger on well-meaning supporters. What’s nice about the film is that even though it contains many clichés, the character’s quirks remain throughout. No one has to change or discover a big heart underneath it all – it’s about finding compromises to enable a mutual path.

The role model for Gleeson’s character was a real big city fairy tale: Harry Hallowes, who lived in a self-made hut in Hampstead Park for 12 years, was able to fight back against investors in 2007. The court granted the owner the property which is now worth 2 million pounds.
