Goodbye Christopher Robin

The A. A. Milne biopic is mostly about how the Winnie the Pooh books were created and also mentions the dark sides of Milne‘s life.

More

Pooh the bear is world-renowned. The smart, carefree story of Winnie the Pooh was translated into 40 languages and millions of copies were sold. It has been a part of Disney‘s colorful world since the 1960s. The story of its creation is less joyful. That‘s the story Simon Curtis (MY WEEK WITH MARILYN) focuses on in GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN. In the early 20th century Alan Alexander Milne (Domhnamm Gleeson) is a promising writer who has already published a crime novel and various story in the popular “Punch“ magazine. He marries Dahne de Selincourt (Margot Robbie), the daughter of the Punch publisher, in 1913 and is sent to the front 2 years later. When he returns he isn‘t the same. The memories of war prevent him from writing and cause the quiet man to break out in violence. The birth of his son Christopher Robin doesn‘t bring him back either. At some point it gets to be too much for Dahne and she leaves him. When the nanny goes away for a trip, the father and son have to rely on each other. Alan opens his eyes to the world of the 6 year old (Will Tilston) and creates Winnie the Pooh and his friends inspired by his stuffed toys. The rest of the story is known, but when the success arrives, Curtis doesn‘t leave out the dark side. The media hype drives the father and son apart again. Curtis is not interested in magical, romanticized memories, which you will probably get to see this summer in Disney‘s CHRISTOPHER ROBIN. His approach is more realistic, even if he does simplify some biographical facts and the tone of his film is a bit unbalanced as it veers between an entertaining film and a social drama. The interactions between Domhnall Gleeson and Will Tilston, in his debut role, is the soul of this moving drama.
