Matthew McConaughey has long outgrown his image as a good-looking romantic comedy prince and has proven his talent with films like MUD, KILLER JOE, and DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. The Texan continues his ambitious streak with GOLD where he plays dubious prospector Kenny Wells who is on the brink of bankruptcy in 1988. While drunk he comes up with the idea of searching for gold in the Indonesian rain forest. The dreamer does indeed end up coming across a lot of gold with geologist Michael Acosta (Édgar Ramirez). Investors quickly enter the picture and make drunk Wells and his companion stinking rich overnight. But then the entire construct falls apart…

GOLD is loosely based on a real financial scandal which was modified for legal reasons. Oscar award winner Stephen Gaghan wrote the screenplay and made a tragicomedy that is brought to life by the actors and the accurate 80s setting with music from New Order and Joy Division. McConaughey plays unsympathetic Wells as a washed-up boor with dizzy spells. His unrefined side can especially be seen in the way he deals with his wife Kay (Bryce Dallas Howard) who gets the cold shoulder the second success turns him into a supposedly better person who has enough money to get a lot of women. The strongest section of the film is the whirring search for gold in the uncharted jungle that has an absurdity reminiscent of AGUIRRE or FITZCARRALDO. The midsection switches between drama, comedy, and thriller in a somewhat predictable plot about the dark sides of success and the typical rise and fall parable so common in the biopic genre. An unexpected twist gets things back on a roll though.
