Florence Foster Jenkins

Frears is a directing master and was one of the founders of new queer cinema with MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE and PRICK UP YOUR EARS. He has found the best possible cast with Meryl Streep in the title role. Frears is most interested in Florence’s private tragedy which is is played with Streep’s typical gusto. Streep turns the numbers into breakneck slapstick numbers and gives the lady a vulnerable dignity. Her Florence is chiefly a victim of her illness and the dangerous therapy at a time before there was penicillin. The parallels to the devastating AIDS epidemic are obvious. His Florence is a woman whose complex productions protect her from shock that would physically and mentally destroy her. “She lives in a very happy world” St. Clair Bayfield says, who is her loyal protector. The audience at the legendary concert in Carnegie Hall is amused by the bad singing but they mostly cheer for the star’s self-assertion. Frear’s film is a feminist tragicomedy in which Lady Florence has the last word: “you could say I can’t sing but no one can say I didn’t sing.”
