Fisherman's Friends

Danny gets tasked with signing the Shanty Choir from Port Isaac to a record label. When he realizes that this was a joke, he is already knee deep in the small town‘s network of relationships.

The shanty choir “Fisherman‘s Friends“ performed at the Glastonbury Festival in 2011 and managed to hit the British charts with classic sailor songs. The film about the hit isn‘t bad, as long as you have nothing against men of a certain age in wooly jumpers. In order to demonstrate their advantage over young men in suits, the film brings a troupe of youngish London record label hotshots to a bachelor party in Cornwall. They want to order four lagers in Port Isaac‘s local pub and are met with “We don‘t serve fizzy drinks here!“ There‘s proper ale for real men, nothing sparkling. They decide to pull their friend Danny‘s leg and task him with signing the local shanty choir singing at the pier to the label. Before Danny understands that it‘s a joke, he is already knee-deep in the small town‘s network of relationships. Danny falls in love, of course, andin truth is an honest guy and everything will be fine. The screenplay has a lot of charm, punchlines, and drive, protagonist James Purefoy as Danny and Tuppence Middleton as Alwyn seem friendly and refreshingly normal, the shanty troupe is earthy. I was raised on the waterfront so I might be a bit biased, especially because our local choirs were regularly upstaged by the Brits, but those who can deal with a bit of “Hooray and up she rises“ will have an enjoyable time with FISHERMAN‘S FRIENDS.
