In the first scene, old married couple Joan and Larry are still sitting in the car, arguing familiarly - he doesn't feel like going to the party, and she doesn't like his constant nagging. A few moments later he chokes on a pretzel at a family function, dies, and is in the afterworld. It looks like a huge airport hall and is, in fact, also a place that revolves around directional decisions. The rules are explained by a young again Larry (every dead person takes the form of when they were happiest) by an afterworld advisor: in the transit area, the dead have to decide on an eternity that they have to remain in for all of time. The options are advertised in stands: there’s eternity in the mountains, by the sea, one without men (very full), an 80s without AIDS and many adventure playgrounds for all of the men who arrive as young boys. Larry (Miles Teller) mainly knows that he wants to spend eternity with Joan (Elizabeth Olsen), but when she arrives a bit later there’s a problem. Besides Larry, there’s someone else who has been waiting for her for over 60 years: the incredibly good-looking Luke (Callum Turner), Joan’s first husband who died in the Korean War. Joan has to announce where and with whom she would like to spend eternity, with the familiar grump or with her first love? Or maybe neither? ETERNITY is an all-around friendly, charming rom-com with a focus on the comedy. What makes it fun is not only the witty dialogue, the well-timed acting of all involved and the many lovingly detailed features, but also a concept that invites you to ask yourself ‘what if’ at every turn.
