Can one afford to call EL CLUB grotesque? A leadenly grey film that can effortlessly absorb Berlin’s November weather where the darkness of every scene intensifies till the screen is imbued with the blackest of black. It is not as if laughter is stuck in our throat – it doesn’t even make it that far. Yet once you recover from the abyss that the film so willingly peers into you actually remember moments of pitch-black humor in this bizarre horror scenario that Chilean director Pablo Larraín has concocted in EL CLUB.
Four men live in a house near the ocean. The house is remote, the men never go into the village, and when they take their greyhounds racing only the slightly younger woman with them has any contact with the locals. The men watch the race from afar. The nature of this strange flat share is discovered bit by bit: they are all priests that are undergoing a “time of contemplation,” pedophile priests, criminal priests, priest that withdrew from their church, and Padre Ramírez who is there for reasons they don’t know. Larraín shows the routines of this special club, drinking, praying, taking out the greyhounds, watching the street, living somewhere between prison and a resort. He shows what happens when an incident rocks their routine and the broken yet very dangerous men begin to feel unsafe. EL CLUB is a grim fictional tale - from the constant mist that hovers over the headland to the shocking finale. Houses like the ones in film do exist all over the world though, for real.
