Park Chan-wook remains the Korean director who is most successful at complementing the classical narrative with innovative elements. He received the Palme d'or at Cannes for Best Film and Best Directing for his film DECISION TO LEAVE.

DECISION TO LEAVE is a police film, thriller and melodrama about obsession and deceit. Policeman Jang Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) suffers from insomnia. The long-distance relationship with his wife has become a strictly regulated ritual. When he takes on the case of an official who falls to his death during mountain climbing, he first suspects his widow, the geriatric nurse Song Seo-rae (Tang Wie). But she seems to have a solid alibi. Hae-joon begins to watch her at night, not just out of professional interest. Park shows how Hae-joon starts dreaming himself into her vicinity while looking through his binoculars: suddenly sitting next to her or standing behind her and talking to her. She sits at the table, looks up, and it‘s as if their eyes meet, yet Hae-joon is actually hundreds of meters away in his car. He wakes up there in the morning. Seo-rae finds him. Now she‘s watching him, and suspicion and surveillance turns into trust and closeness, before twists upon twists break down the layers of the story and new perspectives keep opening up. Park films his love stories and murder stories in images that are pure emotion. The largest portion of the film is set in interiors in which figures are trapped. It is only when Hae-joon and Seo-rae confess their love for each other that the camera opens up and airs out the images and souls. Park then introduces uncertainties again: is a look, a close-up an indication of gentle interest or does it reveal a clue? Maybe even – tragically – both?

DECISION TO LEAVE touches on political topics like illegal migration from China to Korea, the exploitation of migrants, misogynistic violence and corruption. Primarily, however, it is about a thicket of desire and self-destruction. Park has never made anything this similar to the films of his role model Alfred Hitchcock. DECISION TO LEAVE is big, virtuous cinema with a spectacular and shocking finale.
