The British Royal House represents tradition and convention, indeed a conservative longing for bygone values and forms of government. In this context it’s somewhat surprising that Prince Charles, of all people, has been an outspoken advocate for organic food and alternative farming techniques for over thirty years. He and his comrade-in-arms form the backbone of the movement in the UK. But at second glance this supposedly progressive position is not so far removed from royal basic values since the movement is ultimately about preserving forgotten traditions, and promoting nature and biodiversity. This is what filmmaker Bertram Verhaag clearly demonstrates in his film THE FARMER AND HIS PRINCE. Verhaag visits Duchy Home Farm in southern England and follows Charles’ farm manager David Wilson around the huge farm estate while he carries out his daily tasks. Wilson runs the farm by applying and experimenting with organic principles. Supporters of this sustainable model farm also appear in the film, such as the German pioneer of organic farming, Professor Hartmut Vogtmann, who has advised Prince Charles since the 1980s, or the Indian scientist and environmental activist Vandana Shiva. The documentary aims to dismantle preconceived notions held by conservatives and liberals alike – the film shines a light on the practicality of organic farming techniques and reveals the traditional mindset behind ecological forms of agriculture. Both Charles and Verhaag show the benefits and concrete results of organic farming as a way to sway other farmers to convert to organic farming.
