Sometimes films correspond with each other so well, even if it‘s unintended, that it‘s very appealing to put them in relation to each other. DAS VORSPIEL, directed by Ina Weisse, is a film about disappointment, hardening, and a woman without a center. A film about music obsession, a film about a woman (Nina Hoss) among five men (son, father, husband, lover, violin student). Lara, the protagonist in Jan-Ole Gerster‘s eponymous film that came out last November, lost her center too. Both pianist Lara and violinist Anna had to give up a career as musicians. A devastating criticism by a professor did it for Lara and Anna has an anxiety disorder. Anna throws her violin bow during a concert out of nervousness. Full of anger, she focuses on the violin lessons. In both films there‘s abuse towards music students and both characters unload their frustrations. Others have to pay for their own failure. Anna‘s gradually more careworn features makes her a kind of suffering comrade of Lara‘s. But DAS VORSPIEL, with it‘s moments of humor, isn‘t quite as depressing as Jan-Ole Gerster‘s second feature. Just like LARA would be unthinkable without Corinna Harfouch‘s cool, controlled acting, Hoss also shapes the film. The sequence in which her student come to the annual concert against expectation is impressive: what plays out on Hoss‘ face during the performance, the relief that turns into joy, the way Hoss‘ eyes slowly fill with tears, shows finesse and a sense for economy. Both LARA and DAS VORSPIEL are Berlin films. While you can recognise BVG stations and other places in the rigorously composed LARA, the protagonist submerges in the reflecting blur in Ina Weisse‘s Berlin.
