Candyman

More

Helen (Virginia Madsen) is a sociology postgrad exploring the urban myth of the "Candyman". Saying his name in the mirror will make the hook-handed killer appear and kill the summoner, the residents of Cabrini Green claim. But surely that is just the superstition of the disenfranchised. Before long, Helen meets more than just one Candyman.

Based on a short story by Clive Barker (HELLRAISER) , CANDYMAN transferred Barker's Liverpool-set story to the projects of Chicago. While it has a white protagonist the focus is clearly on the realities of life as a Black American. And as is so often the case, the true hero of the tale is the Candyman itself. Tony Todd does for the boogieman what Bela Lugosi did for slavic vampires: He makes the implacable killer sexy, seductive and noble, even while covered in live bees. The music by Philip Glass does its part to bridge the gap between urban realism and gothic horror.

Jordan Peele (GET OUT) is apparently working on a reboot as we speak.
