Bohemian Rhapsody

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY tells the story of Farrokh Bulsara aka Freddie Mercury against the backdrop of the band Queen.

More

The Queen-biography is finally allowed to strut the stage, eight years after the project was first announced and almost a year after Bryan Singer was fired and the film was handed back to the original director Dexter Flechter. Singer Freddie Mercury is clearly the focus of the film. Covering 1969 until 1985, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY shows the rise of the band as the background to the story of the man formerly known as Farrokh Bulsara. Whether he‘s demonstrating the advantages of a singer with an overbite, demanding a very experimental approach during recordings, or presenting a shocked EMI man (Mike Myers) with the eponymous song, Freddie is always the engine of all activity. Rami Malek (MR. ROBOT) embodies his infectious enthusiasm and his spectacular talent on stage, but he also shows a different side in his scenes with fiance Mary (Lucy Boynton) that hint at the fear of loneliness Freddie later tried to keep at bay with parties and drugs. The hesitations before he can admit to being bisexual are also given the necessary amount of time. But the early era of the band is condensed in such a quick way that it seems as though the group didn‘t have to put much of an effort at all. Every strange idea is proven to be correct and becomes a success, right up until Queen appears in what is probably the most monumental scene of the year at the Live Aid festival with a sea of arms clapping to “Radio Gaga.“ BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY manages to make a film that follows a classic three act structure out of a known story with a tragic ending without ever being manipulative or kitschy and makes you believe in love and friendship in a convincing way.
