Black Bag
British secret agent George (Michael Fassbender) has to investigate a conspiracy pointing towards a planned nuclear attack on Russia. What complicates matter is the fact that one of the suspects is his wife (and fellow spy) Kathryn (Cate Blanchett).
Michael Fassbinder, sporting a slightly updated look from Michael Caine's THE IPCRESS FILE (1965), plays secret agent George Woodhouse, and Cate Blanchett plays his wife, secret agent Kathryn St. Jean. Both work for the same agency, but Kathryn, along with five other agency employees, is suspected of treason, and George must find the traitor within a week, or catastrophe will ensue.
Steven Soderbergh’s film is almost a classic spy thriller that is troubled by a question that doesn’t only have to do with the world of espionage. How can you have a sincere relationship in a world in which everyone constantly lies, where it’s even part of the job to keep saying untruths and have secrets? “Black Bags“ are all the activities that need to remain secret, and the spy couple has a lot of black bags. “Where are you tomorrow?“ - “Black Bag.“ When asked how he and Kathryn could be the perfect couple, George answers: he constantly shadows her and assumes that she does the same. They are absolutely loyal to each other. It’s precisely this loyalty that is being used by someone in order to ensnare both of them in a conspiracy.
Fassbinder’s Michael Caine glasses isn’t the only retro element in Steven Soderbergh’s film. The film collects suspects around a table like Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot or Erle Stanley Gardner’s Perry Mason once did. The British spy agency is reminiscent of John Le Carrés MI6 novels. But Soderbergh’s plot is completely modern. People are killed by drones, and those who want to know what is being talked about in a park bench in Zurich can find that out in London as well. BLACK BAG is a clever and elegant film about love in the age of total surveillance and permanent lies.
