At the time Tim Burton's dark take on the Caped Crusader was a change from the previous, more lighthearted adaptations. On the other hand, it was very much in line with the then current wave of more psychologically based comics, with Fran Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" being the most famous.

But amongst all the darkness, Jack Nicholson is clearly having great fun playing the Joker and then of course there is the extremly funky soundtrack by Prince.
