Baby Driver

Baby is the best getaway driver in the city. He always listens to music to drown out his tinnitus. He just has one more heist to pull off – then he’s free. An action musical from Edgar Wright (SHAUN OF THE DEAD).

More

When “Baby” (Ansel Elgort) was still a baby, his parents died in a car accident. All that he has left is a cassette with his mother singing, some scars, and tinnitus which he constantly drowns out with his iPod. With music constantly in his ears, he became the best getaway driver in the city. Crime boss Doc (Kevin Spacey) knows that too and because Baby once stole a car “with content”, he’s forced to pay off his debt.

One more heist and Baby is free and can escape his old life with his new girlfriend Debora (Lily James). Even though Doc is fatherly and caring towards Baby, it’s clear that he doesn’t want let his lucky charm go and people who disappoint Doc are doomed.

BABY DRIVER isn’t a hard thriller, it isn’t DRIVE’s little brother. The first scene has the otherwise cool baby let loose when The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion comes on as soon as the gangsters enter the bank, making it clear that Baby is an enthusiastic music geek. The tinnitus story is only there to include a soundtrack made up of excellent pop from the past 50 years which is a Tarantino-like move, but this movie is far more playful and amusing than his movies. Nothing can escape the music in Edgar Wright’s (SHAUN OF THE DEAD) film: when Baby listens to Harlem Shuffle while getting coffee, the whole world is grooving in perfect synchrony and shootings fit perfectly with the music beats.

BABY DRIVER is virtually a musical featuring the best car chases in a long time, leaving CGI fests like TRANSFORMERS in the dust. On top of that, the characters are so charismatic that small plot holes are easily forgivable.
