Aladdin

Turning animation into reality through extensive CGI, the new ALADDIN offers all the pleasures of the Golden Age of film-musicals while slightly updating Princess Jasmine's motivations.

The live action remake of the Disney classic did not spare any cost or effort and revives the great studio musical with the help of the cast and a lot of CGI. In the film‘s framework an oriental sailor tells a story to his two children set in the Far East. This introduction and the eclectic mix of the Middle East, India, and fairy tale glitter make it clear that it‘s an imaginary place. Young Aladdin and his young sidekick, the monkey Abu, make ends meet with small thefts and Aladdin usually gives his loot to the poor. When a young woman who is giving bread to two children sees the theft, he escapes with her through the alleys and above the roofs in an opulently staged acrobatic chase sequence that sets the tone.: that of a big spectacle.

The cast and story is largely the same as the animated film: Aladdin believes that the young woman is the maid of the mysterious princess who never gets to see anyone and he sneaks into the palace to see her again. In reality, the woman is princess Jasmin herself and she has to marry a prince. The evil grand vizier Jafar helps Aladdin find a magic carpet and a magic lamp by chance. When you rub the lamp a jinn appears who grants three wishes. The appearance of Will Smith as the mostly blue, pretty camp jinn, has a knack for aesthetics and acts like an emcee from that point forward. Aladdin wishes to be a prince in order to marry the princess, but he has a lie on his conscience and the grand vizier, who wants that lamp, as his bitter foe.

As the plot progresses, ALADDIN becomes more and more of a spectacle. The chases are quicker, the effects are more gothic, and the story becomes more of a fantasy than a fairy tale. The ultra-competent staging manages to keep one‘s interest over the 130 minutes with clever twists and the right dosage of intensity. Every plot point is calculated, the manipulation machine is in high gear, and when the machine works this well, it‘s impressive albeit not particularly moving.

As always Disney reacts to the target group‘s current social trends. Jasmine deconstructs the role of family values by not just wanting to decide on whom she will marry, but also starting a conversation about becoming the successor to the throne. The lyrics of a new song are: “I won‘t be silent anymore.“ The patriarchal fantasy of the benevolent ruler, whether male or female, remains intact, of course.
