ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS is a cheery binge viewing experience for fans. It doesn’t attempt to turn the sitcom format on its head and have a meaningful, cohesive plot. Failed PR agent Edina “Eddy” Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and fashion magazine editor Patsy “Pats” Stone (Joanna Lumley) are having money troubles. Eddy’s PR portfolio is dismal, no one wants to have her memoir, and her ex needs money in order to undergo gender reassignment surgery. An attempt to get Kate Moss as a client goes horribly wrong and both of our heroes flee to Côte d’Azur. Like in the original series which ran between 1992-1996 on the BBC and was revived in the 00’s twice, the film’s main attraction is the pair’s nonchalance as they hold on to their 80’s jet setter lifestyle while navigating the world of the rich and famous. Patsy drinks her Chanel no. 5 and sniffs cigarette ash when they’re out of drugs and have no money. Those that judge will get what’s coming to them. Jennifer Saunder’s snappy dialogue, great one liners, a lot of slapstick, and Joanna Lumley’s eyebrow lifts are the heart of ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS. Most of the original supporting cast of the “Eddy and Patsy Show” are there too: Eddy’s personal assistant Bubbles (Jane Horrocks), her wet blanket daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha), and many real stars as well from Stella McCartney to Jon Hamm and Jean-Paul Gaultier. They also seem a bit beaten down, and would probably agree with Eddy’s lament: “all I ever wanted was to not be fat and old and keep the party going.”
